a friend in brokenness
sixteen or
seventy seven years old
skin thin and
showing bones
long oily and
matted coat
broken by patches of
raw red infection
where allergies irritate unto
biting
and scratching
deaf ears oozing
wax
and pus
paws soiled by
backyard dust
nose wet
because it
runs
shaky feet run
solely in sleep
eyes wake only
for mouth
to eat
neglected
only petted
when owner
knows life
is a dog’s
and longs
for a friend
in brokenness

my dog Nicky is old and nasty. he has skin problems that make petting him unappealing at best. there are times when i pet him long and good.
these are usually the times when i am already physically dirty OR times when i FEEL dirty and nasty broken and frail. when i see my own sin and weakness, it is easy to show affection to a dirty dog.
what a graceful dirty dog he is. most of his problems are a result of my neglect. but he is loyal. he has no problem licking my (figurative) oozing wounds.

i love saint nicky for who he is to you. what a good, merited tribute to a constant, loyal friend whose matted hair is always up for petting. such constancy reminds me of Christ's love, always there, quietly waiting for us to acknowledge it.
ps: i have a crush on you. and i think nicky can tell.
