student/teacher
















all are broken
all learn
all teach

all lead
and all
are glued

    for the last 2 semesters, i have worked as an assistant in a classroom that is home to 6 amazing little boys, 2 fun-loving assistants (i'm one of them), a talented lead teacher, and a super-cool student teacher.

    too many laughs to count. this experience stretched my patience and developed my character.

    "student/teacher" is a painting and it is a poem. i made it for Brooke (our student teacher).

    what are the shapes?
    i only tell when people ask.
    (if that's not comment bait, i dunno what is.)

    that's a real sweet painting Matt... hey, I was just wondering, what are those shapes? I mean, I know they're triangles and hearts and stuff... but what ARE they?

    ah yes, Derrick, i'm glad you inquired. i work with 3, 4, and 5 year olds. in order to call the role and simultaneously teach them their shapes, we have ascribed to everyone in the class (teachers included) his or her own shape.

    teacher: "who is here today?"

    the boys: "Oval!" (pronounced obol)

    teacher: "Whose shape is the oval?"

    the boys: "Mr. Graham!"

    Teacher: That's right, Mr. Graham is
    the oval."

    it's real cute. since i can't draw people that good. i just made everybody out of construction paper and then glued their shapes to their chests.

    and that is what the shapes are, D.O. thanks for that totally unsolicited inquiry.
